Give your indoor appliances some TLC as the new year begins

Dirty coils under the refrigerator - eek!

It’s the beginning of a new year, and along with New Year’s resolutions, my mind turns to annual cleaning and maintenance. The cold weather is a perfect time to give some attention to indoor appliances that need a little love.

Cleaning household appliances such as the fridge, dishwasher, stove, washer, and dryer will keep these units running longer and more efficiently, saving you time and money.

Air conditioner or furnace

  • Check the condition of the air filter. For optimal performance, replace the filter at least every three months. If you have pets or allergies, replace the filters more frequently.

Dishwasher

  • Run the unit empty with a cup of distilled vinegar in the bottom rack to clean and sanitize it.

Refrigerator

  • Coils should be vacuumed once a year. Usually, these are behind the vent cover.

  • Replace the water filter if your unit has an ice maker.

  • Check the door seal for cracks.

Stove & oven

  • Ensure good ventilation by keeping exhaust fans clean.

  • Clean stove bottoms to reduce smoke and burnt smells.

  • Inspect stoves with coil burners for red spots, which could indicate a short circuit.

Washer

  • Check for signs of rust and check hoses for any signs of cracks.

  • Also, never fill a washer more than 75% full, as an overfilled washer causes more wear and tear on the machinery.

  • Check the drain filter and clean it regularly.

Dryer

  • Clean the lint filter regularly to improve drying performance and prevent potential fire hazards.

  • Check and clean the vent regularly to improve efficiency.
